The GEMI Supply Chain Sustainability (SCS) Tool is a pilot tool designed to put the ‘chain’ back into sustainable supply chain management.
The SCS tool enables users to:
- Determine which product attributes provide the best reductions in environmental impact (in terms of Global Warming Potential measured in kg CO2 equivalents and water use measured in gallons) within a single product industry.
- Determine which attributes provide the best reductions across your product-sourcing portfolio considering your total spend on each of the product industries.
- Consider price premiums or discounts for each type of product alternative to identify the trade-offs in environmental benefits relative to the cost to procure each product alternative. Identify trade-offs allows users to consider expending the money saved in one product-sourcing department to internally compensate other product sourcing departments to employ some of the more expensive, but effective environmentally desirable attributes in their procurement portfolio.
The SCS tool’s portfolio approach, as opposed to just a product category approach, will allow users to maximize the environmental benefits obtained from sustainable supply chain management efforts at the lowest costs.
The SCS tool features 3 product industries, including paperboard container manufacturing, plastic film and sheet manufacturing, and soap and cleaning compound manufacturing. Product attribute options have not been assessed for other product industries. Please contact GEMI for more information on adding product industries to future updates to the SCS tool.
